Slashing road congestion and building traffic capacity are at the heart of the newly unveiled concept plan for the upgrade of the intersection of Adelaide’s Marion Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive.

The $85 million project is being jointly funded, with the Australian and South Australian governments each contributing $42.5 million.

Both Marion Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive are major commuter, freight and public transport routes, with around 60,000 vehicles passing through the intersection every day.

The upgrades will include new turning lanes on Sir Donald Bradman Drive in both directions, along with an extended left-turn lane on Marion Road (northbound) heading west onto Sir Donald Bradman Drive.

New bicycle lanes will be installed on all approaches, with pedestrian crossings to be upgraded to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians, and to encourage active travel.

Other intersection improvements will include new LED road lighting, asphalt, drainage, kerbing and gutters.

The project also includes new public spaces around the intersection.

The concept plan for the works has been informed by extensive planning, site investigations, engineering surveys and engagement with key stakeholders.

Community feedback will play a key role in shaping the design of the landscaping and the new public open spaces around the intersection, with a view to addressing existing issues and creating a useable, enjoyable community space.

Quotes

Attributable to SA Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Tom Koutsantonis:

Upgrading the Marion Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive intersection is vital to reduce delays and improve traffic flow and safety for all road users.

The intersection is a direct link between the city and the airport, and this upgrade will ensure that people can get to their destination on time.

This upgrade isn’t just about motorists, it is also about providing improved access and safety for cyclists and pedestrians.

It also creates the opportunity to provide a new community space for locals, and we want to hear what people would like to see created there. I encourage you to visit the website, take a look at the plan and provide your feedback.
