South Australian builders have received top honours at one of the housing industry’s biggest events, recognised for their innovative and quality workmanship on the national stage.

An eclectically renovated kitchen and modern barn-style display home – both delivered by local companies – were named Australia’s best at the 2023 HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards, in a showcase of the State’s top-tier talent.

Winners were unveiled before 550 industry leaders at the awards ceremony on Hamilton Island, led by national residential building body Housing Industry Association (HIA).

Fleurieu Peninsula-based South Coast Constructions won HIA Australian Display Home for ‘The Ashton’ – an expansive Scandinavian barn-style home, displayed at Chiton, with character-laden features including stone walls, travertine tiles and an entertainment deck made of reclaimed timber from old jetties.

Adelaide builder Craig Linke Bespoke Building won HIA Australian Kitchen of the Year for their building innovation – converting two small kitchens for adjoining residences into one large bespoke kitchen, following intricate works to the historic home with its state-listed heritage facade and 1800s bluestone walls.

Winning projects were selected from state-based finalists, with South Australia performing strongly in 23 separate categories.

The Malinauskas Government is committed to supporting local industry through its A Better Housing Future plan, as the State works to deliver more homes for South Australians.

This includes fast-tracking the single largest release of residential land in the State’s history – delivering at least 23,700 extra homes – as well as establishing the Office for Regional Housing to help address the housing crisis in regional areas.

For South Australian builders to win at a national awards is often a big ask given the much bigger budgets builders have in other states, to pick these two up is a fantastic recognition that we are up there with the very best in the nation.

SA builders have punched above their weight again on the national stage, it is particularly pleasing that one of our regional builders, South Coast Constructions, has been judged as the best of the best in the display home category.

The HIA-CSR Australian Kitchen of the Year is one of the most competitive and keenly sought awards and for SA builder Craig Linke Bespoke Building to come out on top is a testament to the quality of what we can do here in SA.
