The second year of Boxing Day shop trading hours across metropolitan Adelaide are underway, with most stores able to open from 9am till 5pm without the need to obtain a trading exemption.
Prior to 2022, only the Central Business District was able to trade on Boxing Day between the hours of 11am to 5pm without an exemption.
The government reformed shop trading hours las year, as part of changes in the Shop Trading Hours (Extension of Hours) Amendment Act 2022. This legislation also guarantees midnight trading on Black Friday each year and has locked in three weekdays of midnight trading in the leadup to Christmas.
Shops are only able to trade on Boxing Day and other public holidays if workers have voluntarily agreed to work on those days.
The reforms will allow extra hours for retail stores across South Australia which will be a big boost for post-Christmas sales trading.
Forecasts from the Australian Retailers Association expect South Australians to spend $1.552 billion in the post-Christmas sales, an increase of 2.7 per cent in 2022, the highest increase of all Australian jurisdictions.
