The 2023-24 State Budget includes $27.1 million in investments to protect and preserve our state’s unique natural environment and biodiversity.

This includes establishing BioData SA to overhaul the data held by the state and guide decision making on protection and restoration programs. The project will cost $8 million including a $1.5 million contribution from the Commonwealth.

BioData SA will see the creation of a new biodiversity data system to transform how South Australia captures, manages and shares its biodiversity data with scientists, governments, businesses and the community.

Biodiversity data from environmental consultants, researchers, and citizen scientists will be consolidated which will significantly improve the timeliness and evidence base for environmental, social and economic decisions.

A further $10.3 million will be spent to complete the replacement of the gate infrastructure in the Patawalonga Lakes system and $7.5 million for the continued replenishment of sand on Adelaide’s beaches including West Beach.

BioData SA will deliver a larger and more accessible body of data on the location of plants and animals throughout South Australia which will benefit the environment, businesses and the community.

There are now clear community expectations that biodiversity will be well managed and valued in the context of sustainable industry development and climate change adaptation.

These investments ensure we can continue to protect South Australia’s unique plants, animals and biodiversity, while managing the effects of climate change.

We now have a much better idea of the impact associated with environmental issues and this budget ensures we have the tools and information we need to identify these challenges.

Our coastline, national parks, the River Murray, and many other places within South Australia, attract increasing numbers of visitors and investment to our state and we need to help manage and protect these natural assets.
