The first contracts have been signed for the Malinauskas Labor Government’s $177 million plan to build 400 new public houses to help get even more South Australians into a home.

The SA Housing Authority has already identified 200 parcels of land for the government’s program and is working to accelerate the sites to design, tendering and construction as soon as possible.

Contracts have now been awarded and executed for the construction of 44 homes, across suburbs including Kilburn, Woodville Gardens, Parafield Gardens, Salisbury Downs, Elizabeth Park, Elizabeth East, Elizabeth South, Elizabeth Downs and Morphettville.

Contracts will soon to be signed for a further 33 homes - across metropolitan Adelaide and regional locations in Mount Gambier, Murray Bridge and Mount Barker.

Today Premier Peter Malinauskas and Human Services Minister Nat Cook visited a new six-home development in the western suburbs – an example of the secure, modern home hundreds of new tenants can expect in coming years.

In addition to building 400 new homes, the government is also upgrading 350 vacant properties in need of major upgrades and undertaking an intensive maintenance blitz on a further 3000 properties to improve their condition.

Of the 400 new homes, 200 will be built in Greater Adelaide, 150 in regional South Australia and 50 will be built for people experiencing homelessness.

These new homes we’ve seen today are great examples of what we’re looking provide across the state as part of our $177.5 million Public Housing Investment Program.

In a plus for the new tenants, these properties, along with all current and upcoming new builds are provided to Tesla for assessment to be part of the SA Virtual Powerplant.

All these houses are a mix of two, three and four-bedroom properties, with two-bedroom being the most common, as single tenant households are a large portion of existing Housing SA tenants and people registered for social housing.
