An almost $21million school expansion has begun today in Adelaide’s inner north with a sod turning at Roma Mitchell Secondary College.

The multi-million expansion will allow the school to accommodate an additional 180 students, as well as ensure a renewed focus on sports.

The project will include the construction of a new 2-court gymnasium designed to international competition standards, change rooms and amenities, six classrooms, teacher prep areas, a first aid room, canteen and cafeteria.

Once completed, the school’s capacity will increase to 2114 students. It’s expected the building work will be complete by the end of this year, ready to welcome new students in Term 1 of next year.

Roma Mitchell Secondary College consists of four campuses – the girls’ campus, a separate co-education middle campus and a senior campus and a special education campus – all located on the one site at Gepps Cross.

This project builds on the Malinauskas Labor Government’s goal to make Every School a Great School and continues the delivery of our education election commitments. Other projects which are underway include:

The expansion of Roma Mitchell Secondary College will enable the school to meet the growing needs of students in Adelaide’s inner northern suburbs.

This forms part of our strategic plan for asset management, to ensure work occurs in the right place at the right time, to make every school and preschool great.

Our children deserve to have safe and secure learning environments to support them, and each of these projects will make a significant impact.

The first sod turn today is a significant milestone in this next phase of expansion at Roma Mitchell Secondary College.

The new state-of-the-art facilities will allow us to welcome more students in the future and meet their growing educational needs.

The new gymnasium will ensure our students have access to indoor facilities, especially in times of extreme weather conditions.
