Adelaide’s Botanic Gardens, city streets, laneways and iconic buildings will take centre stage in South Australia’s newest major event Illuminate Adelaide – a 17-day celebration of light, art and music.
The newly created winter event is set to bring the city to life during winter by creating a suite of immersive, innovative and entertaining must-see activities across July and August.
Premier Steven Marshall said Illuminate Adelaide was a terrific addition to SA’s year-round calendar of events.
“With over 150 installations, performances and events - including 41 world premieres - Illuminate Adelaide is going to give audiences around the country the chance to explore our city.
“It will give hotels, restaurants and cafes a much needed winter boost and more importantly, showcase that SA is back in business. We’re out there, putting on world-class events, keeping our economy strong and celebrating our creative best.”
“We’re going to give people plenty of reasons to get off their couches, to get out of the house in the winter months, and support our city’s arts, music, tourism and hospitality sectors – creating and sustaining local jobs in the process,” Premier Marshall said.
Premier Marshall congratulated homegrown co-founders and creative directors, Rachael Azzopardi and Lee Cumberlidge for helping build this event – during COVID restrictions – and for their collaborative work with renowned international artists and companies.
“Despite the restrictions, and having their creative talent and designers spread all over the world, Rachael and Lee have managed to build this event in the middle of a pandemic, and will be delivering an amazing cultural experience to audiences this winter,” Premier Marshall said.
“I’ve seen the highlight package and it is really going to light up our city in a way in which we’ve never seen it – the Botanic Gardens, the Adelaide Zoo, our iconic laneways and historic buildings.
“We have a reputation for putting on world-class arts and cultural events. Only last month we were in the thick of our amazing festival season which saw target-busting ticket sales for the Adelaide Festival, Fringe and WOMADelaide.
“Not only did this month-long party generate excitement and buzz around our city and state, it translated into the highest occupancy rates of any mainland Australian city in our hotels as South Australians and interstate visitors supported our tourism industry in droves.”
Mr Marshall said the South Australian Tourism Commission, through Events South Australia, had been instrumental in bringing the event to life, and would continue to work with Illuminate Adelaide’s ongoing associated events, including those planned for regional SA.
More details of Illuminate Adelaide events will be announced in May, along with other components of the program.
