A multi-million-dollar footbridge will be built as part of a new waterfront housing development at Port Adelaide, creating a key connection for residents and the community across both sides of the project’s dock.
Renewal SA has released a tender for the design and construction of the bridge across ‘Dock One’ – a 750-home master planned community by South Australian developer Kite Projects.
Dock One is set to deliver a significant housing boost in Adelaide’s west and support the future high-skilled worker population – to be based near Port Adelaide – following the historic AUKUS agreement in which South Australia secured the nuclear-powered submarine project.
The 80m bridge will be located at the western end of Dock One and create a seamless link across the entire harbour, driving foot traffic from Port Adelaide’s retail hub through to the emerging maritime heritage precinct at Dock Two.
The $5 million bridge, jointly funded by Renewal SA and Kite Projects and expected to take on a Kaurna name, will cater for pedestrians and cyclists and offer good connections to public transport along St Vincent Street.
The tender, now open, calls for an innovative design that supports Port Adelaide’s rapidly transforming mixed-use precinct while considering its surrounding heritage.
The tender stipulates the bridge must provide enough clearance for small vessels such as dinghies and kayaks to safely pass underneath.
The bridge’s design – including materials, scale and colour – will also need to reflect community needs and avoid impacting the port’s views for waterfront residents.
Pending approvals, construction of the Dock One bridge is scheduled to commence in the first half of 2024 and open by the end of the year – coinciding with Stage 4 civil and building works of the Dock One housing development.
Tenders close on 30 March with the contract to design and construct the bridge expected to be awarded within months.
The Malinauskas Government is committed to boosting housing supply across South Australia and has overseen the State’s largest release of land to create more diverse and affordable housing options to meet the needs of future generations.
