The Malinauskas Labor Government has introduced legislation to abolish the Liberals’ Electric Vehicle tax, making it easier for South Australians to choose the environmentally friendly option.

Delivering on another Labor election commitment, the Motor Vehicles (Electric Vehicle Levy) Amendment Repeal Bill 2022 has been introduced and if passed, will ensure the levy is abolished.

The levy was introduced by the Liberals in 2021 and received community backlash for the message it sent to road users thinking of opting for the green energy option.

A survey undertaken by the Australia Institute in 2021 showed 7 in 10 South Australians were less likely to purchase electric vehicle if a new road user charge were to be introduced.

Attributable to Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Tom Koutsantonis

We want more South Australians making more environmentally friendly choices, not putting in barriers that dissuade them.

The feedback we received from the community was overwhelming, the Liberals’ decision to introduce this tax would have reduced community uptake.

We are calling on Opposition Leader David Speirs and the Liberals to admit they made the wrong call by putting this tax in place and back in this legislation.
