The Paris 2024 Olympic Games will commence tonight, with a strong contingent of South Australian athletes representing our country and going for gold.

Amongst the finalised Australian Olympic Team of 460 athletes, 45 were either born in South Australia or trained in SA during this Olympic cycle.

37 of the athletes selected are South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) scholarship holders or graduates, who have been supported by SASI’s funding programs, elite performance services and daily training environments.

Experience across this group varies, Paris 2024 will be:

  • the fifth Olympics for basketballer Joe Ingles;
  • the fourth Olympics for cyclist Matthew Glaetzer and shooting athlete Dane Sampson;
  • the third Olympics for 12 SA athletes;
  • the second Olympics for another 12 SA athletes; and
  • an Olympic debut for 18 SA athletes.


SA athletes have been selected to represent Australia across 12 sports including cycling, hockey, swimming, rowing, and athletics, where every competitor has their own amazing Paris 2024 journey to share:

  • Jess Stenson will compete in her third Olympic Games in the women’s marathon, after last competing at the Olympics at Rio 2016. Seven months after giving birth to her second child Ellie, Jess clocked a PB time of 2:24:01 at the Daegu Marathon to earn her spot on the Australian team.
  • Callum Peters is aiming to make history in Paris where he wants to become the first ever Australian boxer to win a gold medal. The Davoren Park local is one of two Aboriginal boxers who have been selected to the Australian team.
  • Zachery Schubert has been working towards his Olympic debut in beach volleyball for the past 11 years. He has had to overcome setbacks with injury to achieve his dream, after having both of his knees operated on in 2021.


Selected SASI staff members will support the team in Paris, where Hockey Head Coach Hugh Purvis will be joining the Hockeyroos as an Assistant Coach and Performance Analyst Tim Rawlins will be working with the Dolphins swim team.
