The South Australian Government has given international energy, infrastructure and natural resources business SIMEC Mining operational approval for an expansion enabling the continuation of its current Middleback Ranges iron ore mining operation.

The approval to expand the existing hematite operation will further support current smelter and export operations as the company plans to transition through its proposed Magnetite Expansion Project, a key centerpiece of its planned evolution to carbon-neutral steel production.

The expansion, known as the Cook’s North and Cook’s North West project on Eyre Peninsula, is located approximately 60 kilometres from Whyalla, will initially roll out over the next 18 months and include the construction and operation of new mining pits and associated infrastructure on land already approved for exploration and mining.

SIMEC’s iron ore operation currently employs more than 300 workers and contractors, and this additional mining production capacity will ensure these jobs remain secure as the company transitions its operations to a long-term magnetite resource focus.

SIMEC’s expansion of its Middleback Ranges operations show the company has confidence in the area’s mineral deposits, as well as a willingness to plan for future expansion while retaining workers in the region.

The Upper Spencer Gulf has been earmarked by the Government as a future minerals and renewables powerhouse, and operations such as SIMEC’s will support regional communities while ensuring minerals and metals are being discovered and mined as we transition to net zero carbon emissions.

The South Australian Government looks forward to SIMEC’s continued investment in the Upper Spencer Gulf region as it seeks to realise an ambitious plan for green steel and South Australian exports of refined and value-added products.
