Release date: 29/05/22

The 2022 Hostplus Women’s League Grand Final will be held today at Coopers Stadium in Norwood with North Adelaide and Sturt vying for the championship.

This follows the announcement earlier this week of Jessica Bates from Glenelg Football Club being awarded the SANFL Women’s Best and Fairest.

South Australia has enjoyed phenomenal growth in female participation since the inception of AFLW and the SANFL Women’s League in 2017.

Women’s participation in sport has been a key agenda of the Malinauskas Government as it seeks to ensure positive role models that reflect diversity in our community.

Established in 1877, SANFL is the oldest state league competition in Australia.

The SANFL Women’s League is in its sixth year with the coin toss at this year’s grand final to be completed by Minister Hildyard.

Quotes

Attributable to Minister Hildyard

As an avid football fan, I’m delighted to be taking part in the coin toss at today’s 2022 SANFL Women’s Grand Final.

Having more women participate in sport, including at the highest levels, and seeing them celebrated for being strong and skilful, is transformative and creates movement toward equality in sport and everywhere.

To have girls and boys look up to these incredible sportswomen is an empowering opportunity for our young people who will be inspired to participate and follow their sporting dreams.

I look forward to working with SANFL into the future and to continuing in our shared advocacy for equality in sport.
