Work is officially underway on the $43.5 million expansion of the Tea Tree Plaza Park ‘n’ Ride, which will increase capacity to about 1,200 car parks.

The first sod was turned on the construction site today, Thursday 10 November 2022, to officially mark the start of construction.

The expansion is part of the South Australian Government’s investment in public transport infrastructure in Adelaide’s north-eastern suburbs.

When complete, the new Park ‘n’ Ride will increase the number of parking spaces in the Tea Tree Plaza interchange precinct by 500, from the current 700 to a total of approximately 1,200.

The additional spaces will make public transport an even more attractive option for north-eastern suburbs commuters, making access to Adelaide’s public transport network easier and more convenient.

The new multi-storey car park will be built adjacent the existing Park ‘n’ Ride, and will consist of a ground floor and three upper levels. It will be accessed via a ramp connecting it to the existing Park ‘n’ Ride. This will provide commuters with a single entry and exit point.

Construction firm Built has been awarded the contract to design and build the Park ‘n’ Ride. Other projects undertaken by Built for the South Australian Government include the refurbishment of the Adelaide Railway Station façade and the Walker Festival Car Park (part of the Festival Plaza redevelopment).

The project will support approximately 215 full-time equivalent jobs per year during construction. Construction is due for completion in mid-2024.

The expansion of the Park ‘n’ Ride will make buses, and especially the O-Bahn, a much more attractive option for north eastern suburbs commuters.

The expansion of the Park ‘n’ Ride will mean that hundreds more commuters each day will be able to park their car safely and easily, then hop onto a bus and travel into the city quickly and efficiently.

We have three Park ‘n’ Ride sites in Adelaide’s north-east: here at Tea Tree Plaza, at Paradise and at Golden Grove. We want to continue to support the growth in this area by investing in infrastructure that encourages more public transport use, and expanding this site will help us do that.

The expansion of this Park ‘n’ Ride was first pledged by Labor in 2017 and it took years of Liberal delays before it was finally prioritised, so we’re excited to see it finally taking shape.

This facility fills up early each day, putting parking pressure on local areas such as Gorman St and beyond, where residents have been calling out for a solution – and this development will provide one.

There is a strong demand for public transport in this area, and we want to continue to encourage this by making it as easy as possible to access the O-Bahn and other bus services from Tea Tree Plaza.
