State Government investing in South Australia’s beef industry

The State Government has committed $100,000 toward a Beef Industry Blueprint to improve collaboration across the beef sector, drive growth and boost the value and international competiveness of the industry through a whole of value chain approach.

The South Australian Beef Industry Blueprint is an industry-led initiative, developed collaboratively by key beef industry stakeholders through Livestock SA and The Davies Research Centre at The University of Adelaide.

The blueprint will provide a platform for South Australia to improve access to national research, development and extension funding through national industry bodies, such as Meat and Livestock Australia and drawing on the Australian Government’s Rural R&D for Profit Programs.

The South Australian Beef Industry Blueprint aligns with the State Government’s Premium Food and Wine from our Clean Environment and Exported to the World economic priority, by supporting export growth and helping to realise increased value for our premium products.

The beef industry identified the need to develop a map for the industry’s growth strategy following the successful development of the Sheep Industry Blueprint, which was launched in April last year.

The Beef Blueprint is about driving growth and increased value in South Australia’s beef industry, which is vitally important to the state’s economy and for jobs in our regions.

In South Australia, about 20,000 people are employed in the meat and livestock sector and there are more than 4,000 beef producers.

In 2015-16, South Australia’s beef industry generated $949 million for the state – of this $568 million in value is directly related to exports.

This initiative will build on the existing work which industry are involved in across the state to generate productivity gains and improve product quality.

The State Government’s support for the Beef Industry Blueprint is to be congratulated – this is giving the industry a template from which to increase production, enhance the industry and improve on-farm outcomes.

The launch of the South Australian Sheep Industry Blueprint last year has been hugely successful and we're very happy with the progress and outcomes we’re seeing – it's exceeding its KPIs. We’re planning on seeing just as many successes through the beef industry blueprint.
