About 168,000 South Australian households will save up to $531 off their annual electricity bills after Origin Energy was selected to provide the State Government Concessions Energy Discount Offer.

The Origin Energy offer includes:

  • A guaranteed 18 per cent discount on usage and supply charges
  • Flexible payment options
  • No late payment fees
  • No processing fees
  • No paper bill fees
  • No credit card fees
  • No exit fees

The offer will be available to South Australians eligible for the existing State Government energy concession.

A significant number of the 168,000 eligible households are currently on a standing energy contract and Communities and Social Inclusion Minister Zoe Bettison will now write to them to encourage them to sign up to the Origin Energy offer. Customers will simply need to sign the letter and return it to take up the offer.

The offer adds up to a saving of between $253 and $531 per annum for households on the standing energy contract.

The existing energy concession is worth up to $217 a year. As part of Origin Energy’s successful bid, the energy provider had to show how it could implement the new offer while maintaining customers’ existing State Government energy concession.

Background

The State Government provides $170 million worth of concessions to more than 180,000 households for expenses including energy, water, sewerage, the Emergency Services Levy and the Cost of Living Concession.

Following an industry consultation process, an ‘Invitation to Supply’ was issued to the open market through the SA Tenders and Contracts website on 30 October 2017, seeking suppliers to design, implement and maintain a discounted offer and additional benefits for eligible concessions customers.

All households should visit the energy made easy website: www.energymadeeasy.gov.au to find the best energy deal for their household. The site provides comparison information, including standard and market offers for energy retailers.

We’re providing real cost of living relief to those who need it most.

For the 168,000 South Australian households on lower incomes, a saving of up to $531 is a significant boost to their budget. It’s a saving that will make their lives that little bit easier.

When ETSA was privatised in the late 1990s, all customers were put on the standing contract. Many, who trusted the Electricity Trust of South Australia, haven’t changed.

We’ve negotiated this on their behalf to get a better deal, and make it as easy as possible for people take up the offer.

This offer is in addition to our energy plan, which will put downward pressure on prices with projects such as the world’s largest lithium ion battery and the Port Augusta solar thermal plant.

I congratulate Origin Energy for taking up this opportunity and working with the South Australian Government to get a better deal for energy customers.

Quotes attributable to Communities and Social Inclusion Minister Zoe Bettison

The State Government is committed to putting downward pressure on energy prices and getting a better deal for South Australia’s most vulnerable households.

We know the majority of people receiving energy concessions are on standing contracts and the Origin Energy offer provides a much better deal for them.

This offer strengthens the State Government’s support for fixed and low income South Australians and I urge people to consider switching to the new offer so they can pay less on their energy costs.
