The Premier’s Council for Women has a new chair in Miriam Silva and a new deputy chair in Maria Hagias.

The appointments follow the departure of co-Chairs Amanda Blair and Christine Zeitz, with both resigning for personal reasons at the end of their respective terms.

Ms Silva is a member of a number of boards and committees, and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in education, business and multicultural matters.

Ms Hagias is the Executive Director of the Central Domestic Violence Service and has previously held a number of board and committee positions. She brings much experience in community services and women’s safety.

Both women were members of the Council and took up their new appointments on 1 July.

The Council provides advice to the government on issues affecting South Australian women including women’s employment and gender equality.

Background

The Premier’s Council for Women was established in 2002 to provide advice to the Premier and Minister for the Status of Women, advocate on behalf of women and monitor the impact of policies and programs on women.

The Council is responsible for developing strategies and partnerships to coordinate efforts to improve the opportunities, wellbeing and services for South Australian women.

Another member of the Council, Amanda Duthie, has resigned her membership, leaving six vacancies in the 12 member council. Appointments to these positions will be filled in coming weeks. All appointments are for two-year terms.
